THE HISTORY AND USES OF BALUSTRADING

At Smarter Fencing, we know the history of balustrading. For many centuries it existed as a design used in architecture especially in Assyrian palaces and during the emergence of Renaissance architectural designs. We are aware that even though they were not used by the Greeks and Romans, the design has survived and has become one of the most popular and conspicuous designs of our times.

Functions

Balustrading  fulfils a variety of roles in the home. Principally they provide a railing between timber, stone or cement structures and columns and fortify the compactness of the whole balcony. They also fulfil many other functions such as holding up the cement copings and parapets at the edges of balconies and are sometimes used to support the weight of house furniture. Their peculiar designs have also been duplicated in the design of candlestick holders and other upright forms.

Constructing materials

In the past, balusters were made of wood and their design was carved out to produce individual pattern. These designs were handed down through the centuries and they exist to this day. In time, the types of materials used for balustrading changed but fortunately, the unique designs have survived over the years and are still used with some variations and improvements to their original forms. At Smarter Fencing we are conversant with these adaptive changes and we use them in our balustrading work. In many cases, certain balustrading designs have become the norm for particular areas and architects keep this in mind when they are expediting work in certain areas of Sydney.

Metals in, timber and stones out!

In this day and age, metals and very much in to replace the outmoded wood and stone materials used during ages gone by. The main reason why wood and stone was their need for constant maintenance shortly after being installed. This led to a demand for harder and hence more durable materials and eventually, metal became their replacement, in particular, aluminium and steel. Because of this change Smarter Fencing can now  guarantee its aluminium powder coated finished product for 10 years and its pre-galvanized products for 3 years. This is a sure way of showing that Smarter Fencing products are strong and therefore durable.

Demand for balustrading

The demand for balustrading balconies and other sections of homes are spiralling upwards and so also is the demand for stair railings. A very effective way of realizing the beauty of balustrading is in the use of the same pattern throughout the house so that a continuous pattern is discernible throughout. At Smarter Fencing we also provide simplistic designs for modern homes but we can also satisfy the needs of more sophisticated customers who prefer the use of excessive decorations in their homes. Our design patterns are so varied and numerous that your specific need can be fulfilled.
